Manuel Herz is an architect, researcher and founder of Manuel Herz Architekten in Basel, Switzerland. His award-winning work spans architecture, urbanism and exhibition design, exploring architecture through systems thinking and approaching the built environment not as isolated objects but as part of interconnected environmental, social and cultural systems. Recent projects include the Swiss Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, the Babyn Yar Synagogue in Kyiv, and a hospital in Senegal. His books, including African Modernism and From Camp to City, extend this perspective, examining architecture as a driver and reflection of broader political, ecological and societal transformations.
"By rethinking metabolism, architecture establishes systems in which matter, energy, information, people, fauna and flora continuously interact. These interconnected cycles foster resilience, regeneration and
new forms of environmental, social and cultural value." -- Manuel Herz on Design in Dialogue: Connect + Transform
